Pregnancy Safe Teas to Drink Pregnancy Safe Teas to Drink

Birds & Bees Teas was conceived by a group of mom friends and herbal therapists who understand that mamas-in-waiting get bored sipping the same herbal teas throughout pregnancy and feel confused about what teas are even safe to drink during pregnancy.

We combined our herbal knowledge and our own experiences as moms to give birth to a line of delicious, healthful teas that are safe to drink during all stages of pregnancy and beyond.

While each of our tea blends are safe to drink before, during and after pregnancy, our favorite Birds & Bees tea blends to sip during the heart of pregnancy are:

  • Peaceful Pregnancy: Raspberry leaf is an herb frequently recommended for use throughout pregnancy, but it gets quite boring to sip after awhile. We’ve blended it here with other nourishing, calming and immune boosting herbs that are high in essential nutrients and trace minerals to support a healthy pregnancy.
  • Easy Naps & Calm Nights: We’ve never met a mama who didn’t have trouble sleeping during pregnancy. So we created this calming herbal tea blend with chamomile, skullcap and lavender to help both mama and baby get a great night’s sleep. It’s also a great treat mixed with milk and honey if you have any over stimulated toddlers who need a little help relaxing.
  • Ripe & Ready: We’ve blended warming and toning hibiscus and cinnamon with other healing herbs, including our friend raspberry leaf, to support the last few weeks of pregnancy and the first days after giving birth. Raspberry is a key herb toward the end of pregnancy to potentially make contractions more effective, decrease the need for intervention during labor and help encourage milk production.

Unlike many commercial herbal teas on the market, our Birds & Bees line of pregnancy teas have been created by herbalists who are trained in women’s health. So our tea brewing instructions are therapeutic in nature. Instead of brewing one small teabag in a cup of water as most drugstore pregnancy tea brands suggest, we recommend steeping 1 tablespoon of Birds & Bees loose leaf tea per cup of water, which allows more of the vitamins and minerals from the herbs to be extracted into each cup of tea.

But what if you don’t have a tin of Birds & Bees yet and you’re staring at a wall of teas at the grocery store?

Here are some tips to figure out what teas to drink during pregnancy:

  • Go for caffeine-free herbal teas (or tisanes) instead of caffeinated white, green or black teas. While most things are safe in small amounts, it is generally suggested that you avoid too much caffeine during pregnancy.
  • Read the ingredients on the packaging carefully, and ask your birth professional, midwife or a trained herbalist if you have questions about what is safe to sip.
  • Follow the steeping instructions on the tea package. Not all herbal teas, even if they claim to be safe for pregnancy, are created to be therapeutic in nature like our line of Birds & Bees Teas.

What is (or was) your favorite tea to sip during pregnancy?
